Abstract

This paper analyzes the previous knowledge on breathing and biological function of oxygen on first-year college students of the Psychology program at Universidad Nacional del Comahue. The analysis focuses on categorizing the prior concepts according to explanatory paradigms such as: vitalism, gas exchange, combustion, oxidation and chemiosmotic coupling, and to compare quantitatively the percentage of students referring to each paradigm. Results show that most of the students explain the role of breathing and oxygen according to the vitalist and the gas exchange paradigms. Based on the analysis, we propose to reformulate the pedagogical proposal in order to generate some knowledge based on the systemic relations of this conceptual field.
