Global Warming and its Relationship with Amazonia: Perceptions of Students from Two Schools in the Low Amazon Region, Brazil

Abstract

This work investigates the perception of elementary students from two schools at the municipalityof Santarém, Pará State, Brazil, regarding the global warming (GW) concept and itsrelationship with the Amazonian region. A total of 249 students were interviewed, and their responseswere analyzed by the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) technique. As a result, 7 centralideas (CI) were obtained from each class in the urban school, representing 14 CSD. In the ruralschool, 15 CI and 15 CSD were generated. Students from both schools presented speeches andGW’s concepts focused mainly on pollution and environmental degradation caused by man. Thispoint was also reflected in the relationship established by students between the Amazonian regionand the GW.
