Abstract

A large number of high school students have alternative conceptions and conceptual difficulties about biological processes. For example, they do not recognize the type of metabolism (autotrophic, heterotrophic) occurring in living systems, they consider breathing as a simple gas exchange and they identify photosynthesis as a kind of breathing in plants.
This research assessed a group of students’ state of knowledge before and after the implementation of a teaching sequence developed from a pedagogical model based on the science labs project for UNAM high school. The results suggest a conceptual reorganization Página 26 | Vol. 17 Nº 1 Revista de Educación en Biología around different types of metabolism, and breathing and fermentation processes.
