Abstract

The level of commitment of the mass media in environmental education, the educational offer of the main universities in Argentina for the training of environmental journalists and the requirements that should be met for an adequate participation of the media in education are discussed. The analysis is based on the need to extend environmental education to the whole life of individuals due to the deep and rapid environmental changes we are witnessing. Formal education presents important limitations since it covers a short period of people's lives even in the case of social sectors that have access to all levels of education. The mass media, on the other hand, have the capacity to reach a mass public with different levels of literacy and in a continuous manner over time, which makes them potentially very effective educational agents. On the other hand, duly informed, people can decide how they relate to the environment. In this regard, the current situation in our country shows severe deficiencies.
