Look at the lion! An analysis of family conversations during a visit to Fundação Zoológico de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil)

Abstract

In this study, we used audiovisual recordings to analyze the conversations of six families to understand how they engage with the animals on display at Fundação Zoológico de São Paulo. By sharing information about the animals from previous experiences and information displayed on the panels, the families were able to identify and interpret the behavior exhibited by the species. The children acted as protagonists conducting conversations, choosing routes, reading and interpreting the information. Adults acted as facilitators in understanding scientific terms. Therefore, the results show that when they connect cognitively and emotionally with the animals, the families have a positive social experience that is likely to acquire new meanings.
