Abstract

The most recent studies that explain the evolutionary origin of the dermal skeleton of vertebrates are based on criteria such as the structural (anatomical and histological) and embryological pattern of the odontons. From these structural units, the elements of the skeleton, the scales, the teeth, as well as the odonton complexes, which include diverse tissues and derived organs, would have originated. Since there is a wide field of research on this subject, in this paper we have made a brief review of the most current concepts on the evolutionary origin of these elements, especially scales and teeth, with the purpose of making known the advances in the subject, since their scope and applications are of interest to several areas of knowledge, especially those related to health and education.
