Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation: Denaturalization of Sex in Biology Classes Based on a Study Situation (SS)

Abstract

School is a socio-cultural environment that must remain connected to social issues. However, different conceptions and meanings attributed to the curriculum, create obstacles to debate the issue of diversity in the school. The present work is an experience report on Biology classes with first year middle school students. The experience was carried out in three stages: Planning of didactic unit, discussion of the topic and systematization. Although the concepts of gender, identity and sexual orientation are widely addressed in the media, they still represent obstacles for teachers. This article contributed to the expansion of the visibility of the issue, and to the formation of critical subjects regarding these emerging concerns in the social body.
