Abstract
The western diet prevails in the world, which is characterized by the consumption of processed and refined foods, added to the excess intake of fats and carbohydrates (sugars), which leads to malnutrition and an energy imbalance. Excess consumption of sucrose present in sweet drinks has been associated with metabolic disorders such as type II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, breast cancer, learning difficulties and memory loss, anxiety and depression. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness about the effects of consuming sweet drinks on our health, as well as to offer health professionals information on the different hypotheses about how excessive consumption of sugars impacts the biology of psychosystems, neuro-immuno, and endocrinological. Reason for which this brief review was written considering the most recent publications using he keywords sugar and its relationship with: inflammation, obesity, autoimmunity, rheumatoid arthritis, brain, emotions.
