Resumen

Los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGP) “esenciales” específicamente los de las familias omega-6 y omega-3 deben ingerirse obligadamente a través de los alimentos. Estos lípidos son los precursores de numerosas moléculas con intensa actividad biológica denominadas en conjunto “eicosanoides” en los que se incluyen a los endocanabinoides (ECB) o cannabinoides endógenos. Este artículo revisa los componentes del sistema ECB, y sus funciones en condiciones de salud y en situaciones de estrés crónico, depresión y ansiedad, circunstancias usualmente asociadas. También se describen los efectos de la administración exógena de los AGP y la consiguiente modulación del sistema ECB, tanto a nivel clínico como experimental. Se propone que el sistema ECB podría modificarse favorablemente mediante la manipulación exógena de los AGP presentes en el organismo, a través de la elección de los alimentos. Potencialmente, esto podría facilitar la prevención y control de las alteraciones del estado de ánimo, en particular estrés, depresión, ansiedad y trastornos semejantes que afectan la salud psicoemocional.
