Sobre o uso de imagens microtomográficas para estudos arqueológicos de carvão de madeira

A aplicação de microtomografias à análise antracológica tem recebido poucas referências até o momento. As expectativas sobre seu potencial, sugeridas em parte por seu uso em materiais similares, precisam ser avaliadas na prática antracológica, dependendo das características particulares de seu objeto de estudo e dos problemas que aborda. Este artigo procura destacar alguns dos benefícios e desvantagens da técnica na análise de conjuntos de carvão vegetal arqueológico e apontar aspectos para os quais ela pode fazer contribuições significativas. As etapas de um plano experimental para a aquisição de microtomografias aplicadas a um conjunto de amostras de referência de carvão vegetal de madeira contemporânea são apresentadas aqui. Essa proposta também inclui um breve protocolo para a preparação de amostras atuais de carvão vegetal para a obtenção de imagens microtomográficas. Em seguida, são discutidos os procedimentos de análise digital de vários caracteres anatômicos diagnósticos usados para a identificação taxonômica de madeiras e carvões. Por fim, são apresentadas as descrições da anatomia microscópica de alguns espécimes feitas inteiramente a partir da análise de modelos virtuais obtidos por microtomografia. Os resultados sugerem que a microtomografia de raios X é uma técnica que fornece dados de qualidade para a antracologia.
