Resumen
El “disestrés” inducido por la diabetes mellitus es la experiencia emocional o afectiva negativa que resulta del desafío de vivir con las exigencias de este problema de salud. Se encuentra generalizado entre las personas que presentan esta enfermedad y es una dificultad para el bienestar emocional, el autocuidado y el manejo de la diabetes. En los adultos mayores esta condición se agrava y es más riesgosa, por el envejecimiento y comorbilidades que, en este grupo etario pueden contribuir a una pérdida de independencia funcional y aislamiento social. Estas circunstancias a su vez, generará progresivamente más estrés y menos bienestar. Las intervenciones integrales, basadas en el apoyo psicosocial que incluyan la educación para mejorar la autocomprensión de su problemática, la participación activa en trabajos psicoemocionales, la potenciación del autocuidado y la formación de redes de ayuda, demostraron la potencialidad de disminuir el disestrés por diabetes en adultos mayores mejorando su calidad de vida y por ende, el adecuado control de su condición.
