Abstract
Diabetes mellitus-induced “distress” is the negative emotional or affective experience resulting from the challenge of living with the demands of this chronic health problem. Distress is widespread among people who have this disease and is a difficulty for their emotional well-being, self-care, and diabetes management. In older adults, this condition worsens and is more risky due to aging and comorbidities that, in this age group, can contribute to losses of functional independence and social isolation. These circumstances, in turn, will progressively generate more stress and less well-being. Comprehensive interventions, based on psychosocial support that include education to improve self-understanding of their problems, active participation in psychoemotional work, strengthening self-care and the formation of help networks, demonstrated the potential to reduce stress due to diabetes in older adults improving their quality of life and therefore, the adequate control of their chronic condition.
