Abstract

In the intertwined path that involves thinking about the notions of standard language, language death, language policy and language planning -among others central to understanding studies on linguistic variation and sociolinguistics in general-, the theorist Louis-Jean Calvet will allow us, from two specific texts (1974; 1996), to renew the vision of recurring themes in current scientific studies. In this way, Calvet's contributions will be the motive to discuss linguistic policies and their articulation with respect to other speech groups: we will investigate different cracks, where resistance or adhesions are generated.
We must, then, delve into the implications of language policies carried out, first and foremost, by the State (Calvet, 1996) and, therefore, understand on which institutions or political positions it relies to carry out its objectives. We turn to studies by Leonor Acuña (2013) in order to understand the role of the State in Argentine language planning and its implications for the speakers of various speech communities. Finally, the text by Carolina Hecht (2019), together with audiovisual resources, will help us to crystallize the effects and consequences of language policies.
