Abstract

This work delves into the coexistence of different multilingual settings in Misiones, using Cernos’s (2019) contributions in “Portugués, español, alemán y brasilero. Lenguas y variedades en contacto en el Alto Uruguay (Misiones, Argentina)”, with the purpose of give an account on the diverse representations of the languages that compose the multilingualism in Misiones. Therefore, this work will address how are characterized the relations between languages and their speakers, especially considering the attitudes and appraisals of the speakers, towards the formation of their linguistic and national identities. Cerno (2019) features evidence on the existence of social factors that underlie the linguistic selection, displayed in the speaker’s speeches. From an approach to the situation of the multilingual community in Misiones, this work will seek to give an account of notions such as standard language, linguistic variations, bilingualism, norms of use and, above all, sociolinguistic attitudes.
