Abstract

The results of a multiple case descriptive study are shown. The presentation of the “free electromagnetic os-cillations” (FEO) topic, in ten frequently used university textbooks in Argentina, was examined by content analysis. This topic was found to be important, judging by the granted hierarchy. In general terms, unlike the mathematical treatment, the suggested sequence was homogeneous. The verbal expressions related to angular frequency, the analogies and the daily life applications were scarce. The symbolic resources that describe the temporal variations of charge, current and energy were greater in non–damped FEO than in damped ones. Closed and quantitative solved problems predominated. Conceptual errors were found in two copies. It is concluded that, even though there are some aspects that were properly treated, there are still some others that needed further elaboration.
