Abstract

In this paper we analyze the paintings and engravings in the microregions of Santa Barbara and Cafayate (Salta, Argentina). The research area is situated in the Calchaquí Valley, at the confl uence of Calchaquí, Las Conchas and Santa Maria Rivers. The area has the following art sites: El Divisadero, El Alisal, Piedras Pintadas, Tres Cerritos and Las Figuritas. Rock art is defi ned as a form of graphic expression and is studied under the criteria of location, association and motif repetition. As a result, at least three communications systems created by pre-Inca populations (00 AD - 1350 AD) are estimated.
