This research analyzes, through multivariant statistical techniques, the characteristics of the maternal and infant health condition together with socioeconomic variables in order to verify the possible existence of significant interdependent or dependent relations between them. The relation between the gross national income rate per capita and the infant and maternal mortality rate is studied in 156 countries. It is concluded that:
a) the infant and the maternal mortality are not linearly associated with the gross national income per capita, except in its very low levels;
b) there are rates associated with the infant and maternal health condition which refer to the situation of social inequality and oppression between the sexes, like women’s educational level, equality of educational opportunities between sexes and preventive measures like vaccines and prevalence of contraceptives; and
c) in an exploratory level, there is no obvious relation in Argentina, between the infant and maternal mortality rates and the availability of public and private sanitary services.
