Re-reading Karl Polanyi: Some considerations about the contributions of his work to the contemporary historiography

Abstract

Dealing with the rupture with structural approaches and the return of the human agency, historical studies have recently embarqued to a return to the classics from new methodological directions, seeking for new clues to build the historical knowledge.

Within the framework of this return to the classics, the work of Karl Polanyi has received an important consideration because of the validity of his ideas for the studying of the economical and social events of the past, in special for his attention to the economics as a sphere of society, related to others like politics, culture and social relations.

This article seeks to examine the links between the methodological and conceptual apparatus of Polanyi and the most recent approaches of historiography, trying to show his contributions to the new problems and challenges that historians must face.
