Abstract

Major changes regarding urban order in the city of Santa Fe took place from 1850 onwards. The port was the subject of discussion given the opportunities and risks its growth posed. Social representations were generated around this issue such as how should the city be organized and who were responsible for disorder. This paper reconstructs the port´s representational elements as a place; it approaches the territorial dimension of the struggles generated by the direction that urban order should take. It does so mainly analyzing the letter written to the governor in 1854 by a large group of neighbors, who state their vision on the influence on local life of the port and its inhabitants.
