The Shadows of the Tribune. Gracchus Babeuf and his Legacy in the XIXth Century
Main Article Content
Abstract
Gracchus Babeuf was a source of inspiration
and a model for the revolutionaries to come.
While for some authors he was an example of
the so called “Radical Enlightenment”, for
others he was among the first modern
socialists, if not the first. This article proposes
that this feudist lawyer was a transitional
figure, in which both the “enlightened” and
the “socialist” aspects were present. The case
of Louis Auguste Blanqui illustrates how
selective the recoveries of the babouvist
experience could be and the complexities of
his legacy.
