Daily mobility for work reasons. An analysis of the movements of workers in General San Martín, Province of Buenos Aires

Abstract

The municipality of General San Martín, located within the Province of Buenos Aires and on the border with the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), has a central structure that is largely associated with its transport network, as other districts of similar profile; The European Commission has been a key partner in this process. In this context, the following article proposes to systematize and analyze the central characteristics that mobility takes on for work reasons in the most important centrality within the municipal territory of General San Martin. This is a way of bringing together the concepts of mobility and centrality in order to characterize this type of travel, business trips, but with reference to a particular social group and territorial context: the workers who carry out their daily work in the central area of the municipality. To achieve this objective, different sources of information converge here and complement each other. These involve, first of all, a spatial analysis which aims to give an account of the extent of the centrality of the headland (in relation to its uses and functions) at municipal and metropolitan level, as well as of its central features in terms of transport and employment. On the other hand, the work makes use of various sources of transport-specific data. In addition, information collected through surveys of workers in the central sector is added to generate detailed information for the territorial cut-off subject to investigation. Finally, a qualitative approach to mobility is incorporated: one that aims to capture its subjective character through the development of in-depth interviews, which provide travel stories along with multiple experiences of access to centrality.
