Abstract

This article deals with the different dimensions of retail activities, focusing in one agent: the rural stores houses, called in Argentina "almacenes de ramos generales". They have been a key driving force behind rural-led economic development in the pampas. With this purpose, I examine the patterns of distribution, the conformation of commercial community, their origins, and business characteristics. Fort he discussion of these problems, I adopt a small scale of observation, through case studies, and I use new sources provided by the accounting documents and letter books of rural stores. The study area is one of the margins of the pampeana region (the National Territory of La Pampa) and the period analysed is from the final years of the nineteenth century until the 1930's.
