Abstract

Chicán is a small rural community of Mayan origin located in the Yucatan Peninsula, known as “the village of the deaf” due to the high prevalence of profound deafness. The objective of this study was to determine the inbreeding coefficient in the Chicán community using the method of marital isonymy as a strategy to explain the population structure and the high prevalence of profound congenital deafness. Data collection was conducted through surveys of 219 individuals residing in Chicán. Forty different surnames were recorded, with 30 of them being of Mayan origin. 23.3% of the sample presented isonymous surnames, with Collí (94.1%) being the most frequent. The inbreeding coefficient observed was 0.0585, while the random component (Fr = 0.0571) was 38 times greater than the non-random component (Fn = 0.0015). Eighteen individuals with profound congenital deafness were recorded, of whom 11 were isonymous for the surname Collí. The results indicate that consanguineous unions in Chicán are primarily due to the small population size and its relative isolation. The high prevalence of profound deafness in Chicán may be a consequence of consanguinity, which predisposes to the appearance of recessive hereditary disorders.
