Abstract

The movement of organisms through the landscape results from the interaction between the structural and characteristic properties that determine their ability to move, generating particular patterns of connectivity for each environment and species. The north of Neuquén presents a high spatio-temporal heterogeneity in climatic and environmental variables. The aim of this work is to model the potential connectivity between summering and wintering areas and to evaluate the factors that influenced the use of space by prehistoric human populations in the region. To this end, we generated expectations from modeling the potential circulation of current areas, and then we evaluated the expectations generated with the spatial distribution of archaeological sites. This actualistic approach allowed the generation of circulation models that showed the existence of two main corridors with a northwest-southeast direction. The results also indicate that the generated model shows a good fit for the location of different types of archaeological sites. The approach followed in this work showed that topographic and environmental variables were adequate to generate solid expectations about the location of the main mobility routes during the late Holocene.
