The text originally appeared under the title "Form and variation in a balinese village structure", in American Anthropologist, New Series, Vol. 61, No. 6 (December 1959), pp. 991-1012. Thanks to American Anthropologist for the authorization to publish this translation. We chose to translate and edit this text by Clifford Geertz in the RMA, to consider it a key piece in the debates of the "structuralist era", for its intrinsic qualities and its for the theory - ethnography, as well as for being a primary text of a fundamental author.
