Leaf epidermis of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in relation to genotype and row spacing
Main Article Content
Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the effect of genotype and row spacing on the epidermal characters of the flag leaf blade in wheat lines. The commercial varieties, PROINTA Oasis (Oa) and Las Rosas INTA (Ri), and the experimental ones (T7 and T24), were sown at two different row spacings (15 cm and 30 cm). The stomatal frequency (SF), the stomatal index (SI), the frequency of silico-suberose pairs (SSF), the frequency of prickles (PF), the stomatal width (SW) and length (SL) were calculated. SL was the only variable that showed significant interaction distance-genotype. There were significant differences between genotypes for SF, PF and SW, but the genotype did not influence either SI or SSF. Related to PF, Ri showed a greater mean response than Oa and T24. The Oa cultivar had the greatest mean stomatal width, while T7 had a lower stomatal frequency than commercial varieties. In agreement with the reviewed literature, SF should be a useful selection tool in cultivar breeding programs.
