Abstract
Strains of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana Balsamo (Vuillemin), isolated from overwintering Diatraea saccharalis (F.) larvae and other hosts, from different locations of the Argentine corn region, were studied under laboratory conditions. All strains were pathogenic against D. saccharalis larvae, with virulence ranging from 30 to 96 %. Germination rates, radial growth, conidial production, medial lethal time, and other colony characteristics also varied substantially among strains. However, no relation between these parameters and virulence was found. As a whole, this information allowed the selection of three strains of B. bassiana for further studies as a microbial insecticide against D. saccharalis.
