Extractable phosphorus in an Entic Haplustol soil of the central semiarid area of Córdoba, Argentina. Comparison of two evaluation methods

Abstract
The aim of this work was to select the extracting solution that better characterizes the extractable phosphorus (PE) in a soil of the central area of Córdoba (Argentina). Relationships between extractable phosphorus, soil pH, organic matter, and sampling depths were also established. Soil samples were taken at depths of 0-5, 5-20, and 20-40 cm in an Entic Haplustol soil located in the E.E.A. INTA Manfredi (Córdoba, Argentina). The studied plots were under a cropping sequence and tillage practices essay. Extractable phosphorus was quantified using the Olsen method (P-Olsen) and the Bray and Kurtz N° 1 method (P-Bray). Soil pH was measured potentiometrically, and organic matter was evaluated by the Walkley & Black method. Both methods (P-Olsen and P-Bray) are suitable for evaluating PE in the Entic Haplustol soils of the central area of Córdoba. However, we recommend P-Bray for its better repeatability and analytical sensitivity. P-Bray is more sensitive to changes in pH and organic matter contents. Extractable P analyzed by both methods is highly correlated with sampling depth, and the measures are independent of the tillage system.
