Abstract

The skin, such an important organ in itself, covers and protects the body, has vital functions, can catch diseases which do not affect other organs or present dermatologic pathologies in other places of the body and, finally, it can, as a “biological papyrus”, carry ornamental or ritual images and legends (tattoos, stigmas, scarifications) in different people and social groups.

Tattoo practice has an uncertain origin and a millenary history. However, it has spread considerably in our modern society; maybe due to subliminal messages in the media without analyzing its consequences in particular.
