Porto was born in Lincoln, Buenos Aires province, on 20 March 1942. With Elsa Amiano, who died in 1998, they had three children, one of whom is not an economist. Alberto has 8 grandchildren. He studied all his studies at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Universidad Nacional de la Plata, where he also developed practically the whole of his academic career. In his own words, "I held every position except that of head of practical work". He is a full member of the National Academy of Economic Sciences and was president of the Argentinean Association of Political Economy.
