En Agosto de 1960 se realizó en Estocolmo el XI Congreso Internacional de Ciencias Históricas donde se convocó a la Primera Conferencia Internacional de Historia Económica como parte especial del Congreso, resultando la sección más atractiva donde participaron destacados historiadores y economistas. Se fijo como temas centrales la industrialización como factor del crecimiento económico desde 1700 y el estudio comparado de la agricultura en gran escala después de la Edad Media.
