Adolescent and children alcohol use: prevalence in southern cone countries of Latin America, protective and vulnerability factors

Abstract

This narrative and non-systematic review describes data and trends on the prevalence of alcohol consumption in children and adolescents, with focus on work in the southern region of Latin America; likewise we describe some factors, and research associated with sustainability, the regulation of alcohol consumption, particularly in children and adolescents. The relevant data on the age of onset of alcohol consumption has been decreasing over time and the prevalence of alcohol consumption has been of greater importance, as has the consumption of 4 - 5 drinks per occasion of consumption. We describe the factors that open the doors to preventive treatments or interventions, highlighting the issue of practices based on social norms, the challenge of knowledge about substance use. Unlike personality or biological factors, these beliefs are susceptible to modification through economic and simple ones.
