Abstract

Adolescence is a stage of life in which important physical, cognitive, and social transformations are generated. The present study aimed to determine whether the quality of the bonds with peers (siblings and friends) predicted depression and anxiety above and beyond the relationship with parents. To this end, a sample of 1,151 was recruited from middle schools (46% male, mean age= 14.7). Furman and Bhurmester Network of Relationship Inventory was applied to measure the quality of relationships. They also completed Rosenberg Psychosomatic Scale and Kovacs Children Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed using SPSS Program 20. Results indicated that satisfaction with the relationship with peers predicted levels of emotional problems above and beyond the parents, but the bond with parents was more significant in this respect. In the conclusion the implications of these findings are discussed.
