Resumen
La Enfermedad por Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) fue reconocida como pandemia el 11 de marzo de 2020 por la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Debido a su reciente aparición, todavía no conocemos todas las posibles secuelas de la pandemia sobre los sistemas auditivo y vestibular, pero un claro escenario ha comenzado a emerger en el caso de pacientes adultos. En esta breve revisión se describen los efectos más relevantes de COVID-19 sobre los sistemas auditivo y vestibular, su asociación con estrés, ansiedad y depresión, y su impacto sobre el sistema nervioso y la salud mental en estos pacientes. El análisis de los datos reportados hasta este momento sugiere que 8-10% de los individuos infectados con el virus de COVID-19 sufrirán pérdida de audición, mareos y/o vértigo en algún momento durante el curso de su enfermedad, y un adicional 15-20% desarrollarán (o verán una agravación en síntomas previos de) tinnitus y sus asociados trastornos de salud mental como estrés, ansiedad, depresión, insomnio, e irritabilidad. No se descarta, sin embargo, que más y nuevos problemas asociados con COVID-19 sean descriptos en el futuro cercano.
