Abstract

In the education sector, things are very clear. There are names that stand out for their individual action in institutions, in certain places, in a specific sector, in the educational system in general. Others stand out for their ability to reflect and analyze education and its impact, throughout history, on the organization of societies. There are not many who, like the Uruguayan Jorge Brovetto Cruz (14.02.1933-08.06.2019), combine action and reflection, occupy leadership positions, first in their country, then at a regional and international level and, going forward, exercise influence on the political life of their countries and also internationally. Jorge Brovetto is not a unique case, but it is rare. The parade of facts that marked its history is impressive.

Author Biography

  • Marco Antônio Rodrigues Dias, United Nations University

    Licenciado em Direito pela UFMG em 1964, foi professor universitário e jornalista. Foi diretor da Folha de Minas em 1963 e diretor da Rádio Jornal de Minas, de 1968 a 1970, editor da Última Hora de São Paulo em 1965, repórter e editor de política dos jornais belo-horizontinos “O Diário”, “Última Hora”, “Correio de Minas” e “Diário de Minas”. Colaborou com os semanários “Binômio” (Minas Gerais) e “Brasil Urgente” (São Paulo), foi redator-chefe do jornal bimensal “Ação Popular” (1962) e diretor do jornal “Tribuna Universitária” (1961-1962), órgão do Diretório Central dos Estudantes da Universidade de Minas Gerais (posteriormente Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais). Foi também diretor da Divisão de Ensino Superior da Unesco, de 1981 a 1999, e ocupou vários cargos na Universidade das Nações Unidas (UNU), de 2000 a 2009. Nos anos 2000, doou sua biblioteca particular para a UFMG.
