Abstract

In 1985, the WHO made known the striking fact that more than 50% of medicines worldwide are prescribed inadequately. That is, without any rational evaluation as to efficacy, safety, suitability and cost.

Taking this into account, a research project was carried out in the Hospital De Niños de la Santísima Trinidad as part of a program for better prescription through training in the rational use of Medicines. The objective of the research was to find out what real information residents of pediatrics had on 6 frequently used drugs. To this end a survey was conducted on: adverse reactions, contraindications, interactions and maximum dose.

The overall results indicated: 3.1 % of the residents thought their knowledge of the 6 drugs was GOOD; 34.4% thought it REGULAR and 62.5% deemed it BAD.

Given the evident poor knowledge of the surveyed subjects the management of the Hospital de Niños de la Santísima Trinidad aiming at a safe and high-quality academic medicine approved the creation of a Pharmacotherapeutics Committee. One of the main activities of this committee is the development of educational strategies in pharmacotherapeutics.
