ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES IN APPROACHING READING AND WRITING OF ACADEMIC TEXTS IN ENGLISH AT UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show the achievements and the challenges of the teaching/learning process of reading comprehension and writing in English at university. In the School of Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, we have developed a reading comprehension model to help students with a low proficiency level in the English language to become strategic and autonomous readers after a short instruction period. A challenge we must face now is the demand to prepare students to write research article abstracts in the foreign language. A possible solution to achieve this goal is to apply the Genre Based Literacy Pedagogy.
