The evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the speed in the dissemination and the increasing reach of people caused by the advent of the internet have brought numerous benefits for public and private organizations. In the scope of public organizations, Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet have provided the implementation of digital public administration, and the government has started to make services and information available to the citizen through institutional websites. As a consequence of digital government there has been an increase in the production of digital documents and the need to transform documents produced on paper into digital ones. The requirement of legislation on publicity, transparency, and access to public information has made the government feel the increasing need to transform its archival collection into digital.
The objective of this work is to analyze the importance of digital preservation of public archival information to ensure access to public information in an effective and agile way, and consequently the exercise of social control over the Public Administration. The results of the analysis demonstrate the importance of Information and Communication Technologies in the access to public information and the need for digital preservation to improve the availability of information to citizens.
