Scientific collaboration is a phenomenon that has grown notably in recent years, especially in Basic Sciences. Knowing its distinctive features is essential for research organizations in a decision making context. This paper studies the characteristics of scientific collaboration through data management and analysis methods mainly developed by fields like Library and Information Science. The case of the Biological Research Institute (IIB), dependent on the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP), is put under observation. This is an innovative study since there is no previous work about the scientific research panorama in this Institute. The co-authorship of publications indexed in Web of Science (WoS) during a ten years period (2007-2016) is analyzed. Geographical and institutional filiations are the main indicators addressed. A clear and precise diagnose about the characteristics of scientific collaboration in Basic Sciences is offered by the study of a research institute like IIB, which proves to have a relevant career in the field.
