Abstract

Varios indicios sugieren que aquello que denominamos “verdadero” en un sentido más o menos amplio, se encuentra en la actualidad degradado al nivel de “opinión”, por más esfuerzo que se haya realizado por garantizar su contenido de verdad. Este fenómeno, probablemente acelerado por las redes sociales, toca hoy de cerca desde las noticias sobre eventos cotidianos hasta los resultados de investigaciones científicas. La idea de lo “verdadero”, más allá de las no pocas ambigüedades del término, es un pilar en nuestra sociedad, expuesta sobretodo en nuestra confianza en que el método de investigación nos conduce, si no siempre de forma inmediata o directa, eventualmente a conocimientos sólidos y útiles.

Este ensayo describe con algún detalle la frágil situación en que se encuentra el concepto de la "verdad" en nuestra sociedad contemporánea, y propone una visión del papel que podrían desempeñar los científicos e investigadores de varias disciplinas mediante un enfoque renovado en el método, tanto a nivel profesional como personal, para tratar revertir el curso de una tendencia que puede poner en peligro a nuestra sociedad civil.
