Abstract

The word hospital is defined as an establishment for the diagnosis and treatment of patients, where research and teaching are often practiced. However, this definition does not approximate the reality of the hospitals of past centuries. This paper analyzes the evolution of hospitals from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age from an architectural and health care point of view. The hospital of the Innocents is highlighted as an example of a hospital between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age and they are compared to hospitals today.
