Abstract

The development of sustainable alternatives for agricultural production is a global need that has gained momentum due to the negative impact resulting from the massive use of synthetic chemical inputs. Polymers that use pesticide formulations can also be considered when looking for more natural alternatives in these processes. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of natural films that can be used as a replacement for synthetic polymers in the treatment of Zea mays L. (Poaceae) corn seeds. The biopolymers were made from gelatin, starch, maltodextrin and soy protein. The viscosity and stability of the mixtures were evaluated on the one hand, and the germination and yield of the treated seeds on the other hand. The results indicate that the use of natural polymers in the treatment of corn seeds allows to obtain mixtures with adequate viscosity and stability, without affecting the germination or the yield of these seeds. The results obtained are of great importance in the field of seed technology and environmental technologies that seek to reduce the impact that plastics production currently has on the environment.
