Abstract

The French expression *mise en abyme*, whose literal translation is "placed into the abyss," is a rhetorical figure taken from a heraldic motif that designates a drawing in the center of the coat of arms that reproduces, on a smaller scale, the exact contours of that same coat of arms. The expression is used to refer to a work that is shown within another, that speaks of it, when the two signifying systems are identical: a story within a story, a painting represented in a painting.
