Abstract

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis –MCDA- has been extensively used in Management Science as a tool for evaluating options for complex decisions which several alternatives involving conflicting criteria.

Despite the importance of the formulation of problems in decision-making, we find less literature on the process of articulation and definition of a multi-criteria problem.

This paper examines the role of problem structuring MCDA interventions, based on the definition of the problem and the required level of participation for the proper structuring of the model, placing the structuring within the MCDA process. PSM Problem Structuring Methods are mentioned; with its main characteristics and foundations, like tools that may be employed to support structuring activity.

The work is based on a bibliographical exploration presenting the concepts of the international main relating experts and the tendencies of the topic structuring of problems inside MCDA.

The developed methods are structured and rigorous in order to reach effective results, in spite of being considered to PSM like "soft? Operational Research.
