Abstract

This paper discusses some passages of the great historian of the fourth century AD Ammianus Marcellinus to analyze the process of integration of Germanic groups in the Late Roman army and their participation in the choice of various emperors of the period. This evidence helps to prove that it is possible to recognize many signs of plural and complex identities within the army and that there were no sharp ethnic and cultural boundaries among the members of the troops.
