From Domus to Titulus: an aspect of the Christianization of late-antique Rome

Traditionally, studies devoted to the Christianization of ancient Rome tend to focus on the actions of members of the imperial court and of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Recently, however, scholars have paid more attention to the role played by the Roman senatorial aristocracy, considering its participation in this process in terms of a political conflict with the bishops of Rome. This paper discusses issues relating to this participation, studying the conversion of domestic structures in religious spaces, specifically the buildings identified as “tituli” in our sources. The aim of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of this process.
