Value of the laboratory in the diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis

Abstract

General objective: tocomparethe existent relationshipamongthe clinical diagnosis, the laboratory findings and the anatomopathologic results of Acute Appendicitis (AA).To determine the relationship between the early or late diagnosis of this pathology and the local incidence and the socio-economic repercussion.

Methods: a retrospective study of the operated cases in our Hospital -with clinical diagnosis and laboratory tests in AA- during the year 2006.

Results: there were 54 cases intervened. There was a direct relationship among the clinical presumption, the laboratory findings and anatomopathologic results in 92, 59% of the cases.

Conclusions: ?

- There exists a direct relationship among the clinical presumption, the laboratory findings and anatomopathologic results, demonstrated through the Kappa index. ?

- Although the analitos possesses a grade of own specificity, they acquire special importance when they accompany of clinical manifestations that can guide toward the presumptive diagnosis of the AA. ?

- It is deduced, from the epidemiologic analysis, that AA constitutes a pathology of medium incidence with high socio-economic repercussion when there is late diagnosis.
