Verbal violence against nursing staff: A mixed method study conducted in Quito, Ecuador

Abstract

Objective: To analyze verbal abuse among nursing staff in three mayor hospitals in Quito using a mixed approach to the problem validation

Material and methods: Mixed study of sequential design, n = 387 nurses participated in the quantitative phase and n = 47 participated in 4 focus groups.

Results: It was showed that 146/387 (37.73%) participants reported verbal abuse in the last 12 months; it was corroborated in the qualitative data with hostile phrases and derogatory qualifications.
