Author Biography

Luis Achaval, Academia Nacional de Ciencias

Luis Achával was born into a traditional family of Córdoba in 1870.

He worked as a teacher at the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of the National University of Córdoba. He occupied, almost uninterruptedly, managerial functions such as: Vice Rector, Interim Rector, Dean (in two periods), Councilor and Counselor.

It is worth mentioning that his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences was characterized by countless creations: the Doctorate in Natural Sciences, the School of Higher Education, the School of Architecture (today Faculty), the Annexed Professional School and the School of Aeronautics.

In 1913 he was incorporated to the National Academy of Sciences, institution that had him as president from 1931 until his death.

Mr. Achával also had an outstanding role in the provincial public administration, serving as Minister of Public Works, as Minister of Finance and as President of the Court of Accounts of the Province of Córdoba; he was also a provincial deputy in several periods.

Luis Achával is the author, together with Eng. Manuel E. Río, of a classic work in its genre, the Geography of the Province of Córdoba.

He died on March 20, 1938. In his honor a new mineral, achavalite, was named after him.
