Abstract

Modern technology requires that the geological study of the region to be bored be taken into account in the tunnel construction project, in order to adjust the works to the maximum safety, especially if it is a question of road construction. Likewise, the guarantee offered by the drainage tunnels belonging to the large reservoir works is of appreciable importance. In all these cases it is necessary to have a previous knowledge of the area chosen for such works, and from the geological considerations that the study provides, the necessary defense calculations will be made to obtain the required stability. These safety works consist, mainly, in the lining of the tunnel according to the petrographic and tectonic characteristics of the section crossed. It should be taken into account that in most cases it is not possible to choose the place to drill, demanding, due to the force of circumstances, a place that is not always the most suitable. All this has repercussions on the cost of the works to be constructed.

Dr. Telasco García Castellanos was born in the city of Córdoba on November 19, 1912. He graduated from the National School of Monserrat and then began his university studies at the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of the National University of Córdoba, where he obtained a degree in Geology and later a PhD in Natural Sciences, specializing in Geology. From there he began a long university career; he was a professor by competition in the Chair of Technical and Economic Geology; Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and Vice-Rector of the National University of Cordoba. Due to his deep vocation to the study and dissemination of Natural Sciences, he was appointed Regular Academician (1956) and President of the National Academy of Sciences in 1972, being re-elected for five consecutive terms. The Honorable Chamber of Senators of the Province of Córdoba dedicated a special session in order to express its recognition to such an extensive management for the benefit of Science. He was Member of the Academy of Doctors of Madrid (1972); Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Buenos Aires (1974); Honorary Member of the Argentine Geological Association (1992); Honorary Member of the Provincial Board of History of Córdoba; Honorary Member of the Miguel Lillo Foundation of Tucumán; President of the Board of Directors of the Provincial Directorate of Mines, Geology and Industry of Córdoba; President of the Argentine Association of History of Science (1974-1975); President of the First Argentine Congress of History of Science (1969); Member of the Société Geologique de France; Member of the International Committee on the History of Geological Science, based in Holland. In 1987 he received the "Juan José Nágera" Award for Geological Dissemination granted by the Argentine Paleontological Association. He published more than 70 scientific papers and four books; he was coordinator of the two Symposia of Argentine Regional Geology held in 1969 and 1976, the results of which were published by the National Academy of Sciences; he was a columnist for the newspapers "La Prensa" and "Clarín". Dr. Telasco García Castellanos dedicated a great part of his life to the study of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's work in favor of Education and Science, and his contributions were and still are the object of great recognition among researchers in History of Sciences in Argentina. He died in the city of Córdoba on July 14, 2008.
